"I think that conventional therapy is about 'managing' internal pain
and finding different behaviours to 'cope' with that pain,
whereas EMDR just wipes it out."

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (more commonly known as EMDR), is a form of psychotherapy developed in the 1980s by American psychologist Francine Shapiro.
EMDR is primarily used for psychological trauma and has been recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment of choice for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR is also recognised to often be helpful in the treatment of
depression
anxiety
phobias and fears
stress management
low self-esteem
scarring/BDD
EMDR facilitates the processing of stuck trauma memories, by allowing a desensitisation and experiencing of the trauma memory whilst attention is 'distracted' or 'divided' by a bilateral sensory stimulation, including repeated horizontal eye movements or shifting left-right tones/music in headphones.
Once the traumatic memory is properly processed it no longer causes the underlying emotional upset and the individual can begin to move on.
Before processing the traumatic memory, the client is given strategies and exercises to help manage their anxiety/mood. Generally, after a week (or two) of practising these strategies ,Individuals will have confidence in their ability to manage some of their upset, and then they then feel ready to engage in the EMDR processing.
